fall in the garden-10/27/13

on a recent, pre-frost visit to the garden, i found a mushroom forest under the willow oak in the shade garden.

they were very fragile and probably only lasted for a day or so.

what they looked like as they emerged from the wood chips/soil

look at the zombie garden, the pineapples are loving it out there.  after this photo, they were dug up and will be indoors for the winter.  once the summer weather returns, they will go back out to the garden.

the herb garden has exploded!  the rosemary makes a nice backdrop for the tarragon/borage forest that has taken over the bed.

 black cotton in bloom

that's hot!  tabasco peppers in abundance.

it is hard to believe that fall is here.  just a few weeks ago, the garden was thriving and green.  basil was in bloom and peppers were ripening on the plants.

even the lemon verbena was in full bloom

the satellite dish was full of zinnias putting on a beautiful display.  then, frost happened as it does each year.

the burning bushes are showing a hint of color.  the nematode eradication plan is taking shape, the plot has been treated with an herbicide to kill the plants before we seed it.

the basil in the herb garden was killed off by the frost

the cannas were heavily damaged and need to be cut back.

the pineapple sage was hit hard as well and if we are lucky, it will survive winter and come back again for a third season.

the tabasco peppers took a pretty hard hit as well.

but despite the cold, the tarragon is in full bloom.
