small group of gardeners seeks an ark, preferably vacant...

our work day was a bust-or was it?  darry and i arrived at 8am, in the rain and shortly afterwards, david joined us.  it was raining lightly, completely dreary and quite swampy.  nevertheless, the work needed to be done!  darry and david got to work on the rain garden; the heavy rains of this last week caused some erosion and the stream bed needed to be repaired.  the vinyl liner also needed to be installed to prevent further erosion from taking place.  shortly after they began working, we were joined by edie and cherri and then as we were leaving (after 3 hours in the rain, with downpours and lightning, can you blame us?)  a break in the weather occurred and a few other brave souls came out to join in on the muddy fun.  check out the pictures to see what we were able to do.

we did make it out on sunday as well, so did courtney and much weeding occurred!  thanks to everyone who braved the rain to come out and work!

the erosion damage is evident.  there is a clear flow of silt into the basin.

another view of the silt flow into the basin.

david and darry are digging out the liriope in the pouring rain so that they can fit in the vinyl
liner.  they are also laughing at me for hiding under the canopy.

digging out more plants

digging out more of the erosion damage in the stream bed for the liner.

laying out the liner

weighing it down on the bank to prevent it from moving

the plants in the basin are doing well, the sweet spire is covered in buds.

the siberian iris is already blooming

the tickseed will bloom soon too

the advantage of working with david cook is that you can learn so much!  he spotted monarch caterpillars on the swamp milkweed in the butterfly garden.

more of the caterpillars

a close-up of the caterpillars

a beautiful dragonfly that was also in the butterfly garden

keep posted, we will have many work opportunities for those in need of fulfilling the certification requirements.  also, we need to get ready for the homeowners day and we are out in the garden onsaturdays and sundays in the morning and on some afternoons during the week.  feel free to email me for more information-garden4groceries@bellsouth.net
